International sessions are the flagship event of the European Youth Parliament that young people in the network organise. All the participants organising these events are volunteers between the ages of 18-28. They gather around 300 young people from 40 different countries three times a year. They offer all the young participants a one-of-a-kind opportunity to engage with other young people and discuss current events.
The purpose is to inspire the youth and try to shape them into respectful, strong and active citizens in society.

The city and the region

The location of this flagship event was not randomly chosen. The vision for Tromsø 2023 is for it to be a place where participants can experience the Arctic, learn more about its problems and their potential solutions and delve deeper into the cultural heritage of the city.
Tromsø is located in the northern part of Norway and is home to the Arctic council, which is why it is also called the capital of the Arctic. The Arctic region has a very rich history and culture, which we aim to share with all participants. The northernmost indigenous people, the Saami, have experienced years of discrimination and neglect. With the session being held in Tromsø, we have strived to corporate the Saami, and we will be joined by a Saami delegation and guest speaker.
The city is divided into two islands; Tromsøya and Kvaløya. The city centre of Tromsø is located on the island Tromsøya but the urban area also encloses part of the nearby mainland and part of the island Kvaløya. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland by both a bridge and a tunnel whereas Kvaløya is connected to Tromsøya by a bridge.
The Arctic Cathedral also known as Ishavskatedralen is a parish church on the mainland in the valley Tromsdalen, which is a part of Tromsø municipality. The name translates to ‘’The Cathedral of the Arctic sea’’, thus its nickname The Arctic Cathedral, the church is a cathedral. The church was designed by Jan Inge Hovig and completed in 1965. The church is one of the most notable architectural constructions of Tromsø due to its design, which is why it is also our logo for the session.

Programme elements
of the event
Teambuilding: The session will begin with General Teambuilding - here, the participants will take part in the first exercises and meet the volunteers that will be leading them for the remainder of the session. The goal is to give the participants a general introduction. Afterwards, the participants will be divided into their assigned committees. Most of the time spent at the session is with their committees and to prepare them to be comfortable with discussing within their committees, it is important to build a bond with the people you are working with. The team building within the committees includes problem-solving exercises, creative tasks and other activities that help the participants to overcome their nervousness and get to know each other.
Eurovillage: At the Eurovillage, a hallmark event of an International Session, all participants will have brought food local to their own countries. All delegations will put on a display, and the participants get to move about the “food fair” trying different flavours from all over Europe. This is also a chance for the participants to learn more about the local culture, especially Sámi food traditions, socialise and exchange their own cultures in a relaxed setting.
Committee Work: The participants will begin their discussion and work on their topic. At Tromsø 2023 most will be discussing a topic related to the Arctic region. The discussion will be led by an experienced youth volunteer, and supported by an Arctic expert. These discussions are conducted in a sophisticated manner, and with active and engaging learning at its core.
Opening Ceremony: Each session begins with a formal session to officially start the event. At Tromsø 2023 it will be an engaging and active format. Keynote speakers, including the Foreign Ministry of Norway’s State Secretary, Eivind Vad Petersson, will open the event. Following this there will be a panel debate with local actors from organisations and stakeholders across the session's themes that will speak on the importance of the Arctic and youth engagement in the region. Afterwards, the speakers and panellists will be invited to meet the participants and engage with the youth directly in an informal reception.
Sámi evening event: With the culture and region of the Arctic, Tromsø 2023 will have a Sámi evening event. This is an evening where the participants will be able to move about several rooms. In each room, there will be a new aspect of Sámi culture. There will for example, be a room displaying Sámi art, a room for joiking lessons, a room about traditional Sámi clothing and one where the participants will have the opportunity to taste traditional Sámi food.
Cultural Day: For the cultural day the participants have the opportunity to choose from a variety of cultural activities. These activities include a trip to the Arctic aquarium, a movie showing at Verdensteateret, a trip to Nordnorsk Kunstmuseam, dog sledding and a walking tour of the city.
Closing Ceremony: At the closing ceremony guests and speakers will be invited to come. There will be speeches held by the team of Tromsø 2023, The European Youth Parliament’s Governing Body and sponsors and supporters.
General Assembly: The General Assembly is where all the committees gather together and discuss each resolution the participants have worked on. The participants will become familiar with all the topics that have been discussed at the session through public speaking and discussion.
Farewell evening: The last event of Tromsø 2023 will be a bonfire night outside at the Tromsø Lodge and Camping. This night will be under the stars with bonfires, warm beverages, fun activities and the opportunity to see the northern lights.
